Islam is derived from the root meaning peace and the Quran contains verses encouraging peace among people.  The Quran says ‘it is a guide to the ways of peace,’ and ‘Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darkness into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.’

Surah Al Maaidah 5:16

Ibn Kathir mentions in his commentary that it means  do not swear much (oaths or vows) and if you have sworn against doing something good, then break that oath and do the good action, including making peace amongst people.  For example, don’t make a vow saying you won’t help a person or people, even if they are poor or helpless.  But if you have made a vow like that, break it and help them.

These are the dignified people who walk with humility, not with arrogance and pride.  If the ignorant people insult them with bad words, they do not respond in kind, but forgive and overlook, and say nothing but good words.

‘And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, “For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.’

Surah Al Qasas 28:55

Ibn Kathir writes: this means if some foolish person speaks to them in a foolish manner and says something to which it does not befit a response, they turn away from him and do not respond in kind with ugly speech.
