Virtues of the Masjid in Quran and Hadith

The Masjid is the most beloved of places to Allah. So naturally, the people who frequently visit the masjid will be those who are most beloved to Him too. Many virtues of the masjid have been mentioned in Quran and hadith and these will be listed in the article.

Abu Huraira RA narrates that Nabi SAW said: “The most beloved of places to Allah are the Masajid, and the most hated of places to Allah are the markets.”

Sahih Muslim

Why are the markets the most hated places to Allah?

This is because when people go to the market, they become negligent and forgetful of Allah. They stop his zikr to talk to people. There is lying and deceiving going on from businessmen. Some people might also be stealing. The markets are a place where people persist on sin, and if they aren’t sinning then they are usually away from the remembrance of Allah.

Virtues of the Masjid in the Quran

The importance and virtues of the masjid are such that Allah has mentioned in various parts of the Holy Quran:

  1. SURAH NUR [24:36-37]

˹That light shines˺ through houses ˹of worship˺ which Allah has ordered to be raised, and where His Name is mentioned. He is glorified there morning and evening, by men who are not distracted—either by buying or selling—from Allah’s remembrance, or performing prayer, or paying alms-tax. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will tremble.

2. SURAH TAWBAH [9:18]

The mosques of Allah should only be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and fear none but Allah. It is right to hope that they will be among the ˹truly˺ guided.

3. SURAH BAQARAH [2:114]

Who does more wrong than those who prevent Allah’s Name from being mentioned in His places of worship and strive to destroy them? Such people have no right to enter these places except with fear. For them is disgrace in this world, and they will suffer a tremendous punishment in the Hereafter.

Hadith on Virtues of the Masjid

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Seven are (the persons) whom Allah will give protection with His Shade* on the Day when there will be no shade except His Shade (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection), and they are: A just ruler; a youth who grew up with the worship of Allah; a person whose heart is attached to the mosque; two persons who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah; a man whom a beautiful and high ranking woman seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying): ‘I fear Allah’; a person who gives a charity and conceals it (to such an extent) that the left hand might not know what the right has given; and a person who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes well up.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

This hadith is mentioned due to the part highlighted in red. “a person whose heart is attached to the mosque” means the person who always wishes to be in the masjid and when he isn’t then his heart yearns for it. In times like this where our masajid are closed because of a pandemic or such situations, and if we have this yearning of being in the house of Allah, we should thank Allah for granting us this connection and love.

Hadith on learning in the Masjid

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) in His proximity.”

Sahih Muslim

This hadith tells us that we shouldn’t only go to the masjid for congregational prayers but also to learn and study our faith. We should strive to increase our knowledge and help others increase their knowledge. Through this we will attain tranquility and mercy from Allah, things we can’t attain from the anything of the world.

Summary on virtues of the masjid

This pandemic has had a huge effect on all of us and we have been deprived of the connection between us and the house of Allah. Pray to Allah that He allows us to re-enter His houses quickly and He allows us to feel a love and passion for spending time in the masajid.
