The Quran is divided into 114 chapters, or surahs, and each surah is further divided into verses. The last two ayat of Surah Qalam, the 68th chapter of the Quran, are particularly well known and are recited by Muslims around the world. The Surah is also called Nuun, which is the first word it begins with.
Surah Qalam theme
The title of the surah, Qalam, means “pen” in Arabic and it is named so because the majority of the verses discuss the pen and its relationship with knowledge. The pen is used to write the words of Allah, and these words have power and effect.
Near the end of the surah, Allah talks about how He has given man two eyes, two ears, and a tongue. But man is ungrateful and does not use these gifts properly. He only uses them to commit evil and to spread mischief.
The last two ayats of Surah Qalam mention the actions of the disbelievers who through their hatred of Islam, and jealous of the Prophet (SAW), would try any way possible to make Islam falter, even through the evil eye, in order to have some effect on the Prophet (SAW) especially.
These verses are believed to be among the most powerful in the Quran, and they are often recited as a prayer for guidance and protection. In these verses, Allah tells the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that he has been given the gift of the Quran, and that he is to use this gift to guide humanity.
The Prophet (SAW) is also told in these verses that he is the chosen one, and that he has been given a great responsibility: to bring the Quran as a reminder to all the creatures.
He is to lead the way for others, and to show them the right path. These verses are a source of comfort and strength for many Muslims, and they remind us of the great responsibility that we have been given.
The evil eye is real
Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih from Ibn `Abbas (RA) that the Prophet (SAW) said, ‘The evil eye is real. If anything were to overtake the divine decree (and change it), then it would be the evil eye. And if you perform Ghusl (to remove the evil eye) then wash well.’
It is reported from Ibn Abbas that he said,“The Messenger of Allah (SAW) used to invoke Allah’s protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (his grandsons RA) by saying:
‘I seek protection for you two by the perfect Words of Allah from every Shaytan, and dangerous creature, and from every eye that is evil.’
Then he would say:
Like this, Ibrahim (AS) used to seek protection for Ishaq and Ismail AS his sons. This Hadith was recorded by Al-Bukhari.
Surah Qalam last two ayat benefits
The benefits of the last two ayats are that they remind us of the truth that the Prophet (SAW) brought. The Quran is a reminder to all, and whoever follows its guidance will be successful. So follow it and follow the sunnah.
It also informs us that evil done by people can be done through the eyes of hatred and jealousy, and Islam has given remedies for this too. Use the Quran, especially the Surahs Falaq and Naas to ward off the effects of evil eye.
