Rain – Duas and Sunnahs

The time when the rain comes down is a time of divine bounty and mercy from Allah to His slaves. There are many duas and sunnahs that the Prophet (SAW) used to focus on when it rained.  Maybe we know one or two but many have become forgotten or not practiced.  Here are some of them as a reminder.

Sunnahs when it rains

  • He regarded rain as a mercy of Allah and called it Rahmah.
  • Recite one of the duas relevant to the type of the rain.
  • Expose part of your body (head, arm, neck etc.) so it’s touched by the rain.
  • Make a dua (supplication) when it rains as it is one of the times of accepted duas.
  • Thank Allah for the blessing of the rain after he has sent it down on us.

Hadith on rain

Ibn Umar (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW) said, “Never do people withhold alms from their wealth but that a portion from the sky will be held back; were it not for the animals, it would never rain.” (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr)

Aisha (RA) reported: The Prophet (SAW), if there was a windy storm, he would say, “O Allah, I ask You for its good, the good within it, and the good for which it was sent. I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil for which it was sent.” If the sky began to light up and thunder, the color of the Prophet’s face would change and he would anxiously come and go, back and forth. If it rained, he would be pleased with it and I could recognize the signs of that on his face. I asked him about it and the Prophet said, “O Aisha, perhaps it is as Allah said about the people of ‘Ad: When they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said this is a cloud bringing us rain!” (Surah 46:24) (Muslim)
