What is Surah Waqiah about?
This surah talks about the Last Day and how mankind will be divided into three groups depending on their deeds. It focuses on the oneness of Allah, the hereafter, and opposing the suspicions and doubts of the disbelievers of Makkah.
Being revealed before hijrah, the kuffar and polytheists found it hard to believe that there is a heaven and hell, and a judgment day where everyone will be taken into account for their actions done in the world.
They found it surprising that the entire universe, or what they knew of it, was to be destroyed soon and that there will be an eternal life after this one.
Verses | Theme and Subject Matter |
---|---|
1-6 | Description of the beginning of the end of time. How the earth will be destroyed. |
7-56 | All people will be divided into three classes: (1) The foremost in rank and position; (2) the common righteous people and (3) those who denied the Hereafter and persisted in disbelief and polytheism and major sins till the last. How these three classes of the people will be rewarded and punished has been described in detail |
57-74 | Arguments to prove tawheed (oneness of Allah) and the akhirah (hereafter). Allah uses the example of the creation of the human body to question the disbelievers. |
75-82 | Any suspicions the polytheists had are refuted in these verses. Then the disbelievers have been told that this Book is inscribed in that Book of Destiny, which is beyond the reach of the creatures. |
83-96 | Humans have been warned that if they want they can reject the truth and disbelieve, but when death comes, you will be helpless. |

We all go through tough times during our lives, and many times we don’t even know what to do. Fortunately for us, the Holy Quran along with the teachings of Nabi SAW has a solution for everything.
When to recite Surah Al-Waqiah
According to a hadith, surah Waqiah can be read every night to ward off poverty. It is also called the chapter of wealth and helps bring abundance and prosperity into your life. Many people recite the surah after Magrib salaah.
You should try to read as much Quran as possible every single day. Although it is good that you recite Al-Waqiah regularly, the entire Quran should be read. The more you read, the more rewards you will gain. Don’t limit and restrict yourself to only one surah.
Remember, Allah is the one who provides for us. Along with reciting this surah, you have to continuously make dua to Allah and seek His help. There are no authentic narrations where we can clearly find the virtues and benefits of surah waqiah.
Hadith on Surah Waqiah
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas’ud:
Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “If anyone recites a letter from Allah’s Book he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim are one letter, but alif is a letter, lam is a letter and mim is a letter.”
Tirmidhi
Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah SAW said, “Whoever recites Surah Waqiah every night, he will never be afflicted by poverty. And Ibn Masood (RA) used to order his daughters to read it every night.”
Bayhaqi in Shuab al-imaan
The hadith mentioned is through a reliable source, however, there aren’t any supporting hadith. Weak hadith can also be taken when it comes to virtues and doing good deeds. The entire Quran is a form of bringing barakah so make the most of it.
