Surah Humazah, also known as surah ‘al hutamah’ is the 104th chapter in the Holy Quran. It consists of 9 verses and is part of the 30th juz of the Quran. The title means the Traducer and was revealed in Makkah before the migration.
Meaning of the Surah
Certain leaders of the Quraish tribe would continuously mock, insult and slander the believers. So Allah sent down this surah exposing their crimes and then mentions what their punishment will be on the Day of Judgment. But this surah is also a warning for any person who falls into the crimes of humiliating and belittling others.
The surah follows on from surah Asr which states that man is in a state of loss. Surah Humazah then mentions what puts a person in a state of loss – backbiting, slandering and mocking etc of others, and how that person is also distracted and deceived by his wealth having accumulated and constantly counting. The love of this wealth entered his heart.
